Emergents

I often begin a painting with sweeping geometric marks that begin outside the borders of the canvas. Figures and background shapes emerge from these random marks, and I refine the emergent images to create paintings that are both abstract and realistic. I often leave vestiges of the original overall pattern.

Motifs

Since childhood I’ve been oddly compelled to doodle the shape of a double triangle, a kind of sharp-edged infinity sign. Why this shape was in my mind was a mystery until a recent visit to the Orkney Islands, where my mother’s family lived for eons. I saw three stones recently discovered in a Stone Age site called the Ness of Brodgar. A double triangle was carved clearly into the edge of each stone. This symbol has become the central element of my personal geometry.

Landscape Geometry

I am inspired by beautiful landscapes in my home state of Florida. Here I apply my personal geometry in ink over an acrylic monotype.

Figures

Women’s portraits, traditional and otherwise, painted singly and in groups, are a staple of my practice.

Print Making /Collage

Some of my monotypes, engravings and relief prints make their way into large and small collages.
