Long ago I read one of those “10 Things You Should Never Do as an Artist” advice columns. First on the Never Do list was Never Paint Religious Paintings. So I became very interested in painting religious paintings in a contemporary way.
Work in Progress: “Nativity”
Using charcoal I make sweeping marks across the blank canvas. The way the marks intersect creates a dense pattern in which I see figures, backgrounds and foregrounds emerging. I call these “emergent paintings.” Sometimes I see a nativity scene, sometimes an angel announcing to the Virgin Mary, sometimes Hamlet and Ophelia.
